Evesham Township is moving forward with plans to preserve the former Barton Run Swim Club property as public open space.
The 3.84-acre property sits along Lakeside Drive and previously faced plans for six new homes.
Instead, developer Orleans Investment Land Associates intends to sell the property to Evesham Township.
The purchase price is expected to range between $670,000 and $810,000. However, a Green Acres appraisal will determine the final amount.
To support the acquisition, Evesham secured a $405,000 grant through New Jersey’s Green Acres Program.
Meanwhile, the township has budgeted Open Space funds to cover the remaining purchase costs.
Before the transaction closes, the developer will clear the former swim club property. The Barton Run Swim Club closed approximately 10 years ago.
Plans call for demolishing the existing clubhouse and swimming pool. Additionally, the developer will fill the site and plant grass.
Once Evesham takes ownership, the township plans to involve residents in determining the property’s future recreational uses.
The municipality is also pursuing additional grant funding for rain gardens at the site. These improvements could support stormwater management while enhancing the future park.
Furthermore, the acquisition continues Evesham’s broader strategy of protecting land from development.
Recent preservation efforts have included significant properties throughout the township. Those projects have added hundreds of acres to Evesham’s protected open space.
The former Barton Run Swim Club represents a smaller property with a direct neighborhood impact.
Ultimately, the acquisition would replace a proposed residential development with permanently preserved public land. It would also create another recreational opportunity for Evesham residents.
